Yankee Doodle Nursery Rhyme Lyrics

Yankee Doodle

Yankee Doodle

One of the most popular and beloved songs, especially in the USA, the “Yankee Doodle” is a patriotic rhyme, first found in written form in 1775.The first known version of Yankee Doodle is attributed to English doctor Richard Shackburg. The song uses the same melody as the “Lucy Locket” rhyme.

The origin of Yankee Doodle is related to the Seven Year’s War. The British army used to dub “Yankees” the New England’s (USA) soldiers, for being so naïve and inexperienced.

Lyrics To “Yankee Doodle”

Yankee Doodle went to town
riding on a pony,
Stuck a feather in his cap,
and called it macaroni,
Yankee Doodle keep it up,
Yankee Doodle dandy,
all the girls and lassies,
are as sweet as sugar candy.
